Acceptable thoughts

May my words and my thoughts be acceptable to you, O Lord, my refuge and my redeemer!” ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭19‬:‭14‬

I frequently tell my clients, we don’t have control over the thoughts that pop in our head; we can control what we do with them. Depression, anxiety, fear and anger all start in our thoughts. Where we put our focus, is where we will go. If our thoughts are depressing, depression will grow. If our thoughts are anxious, anxiety grows. If our thoughts are angry, anger grows.

When we line our thoughts up to obey Christ, our thoughts will be acceptable to Him. We can challenge our negative thoughts with the things He tells us to think on. “In conclusion, my friends, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable. Put into practice what you learned and received from me, both from my words and from my actions. And the God who gives us peace will be with you.”‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭8‬-‭9‬ ‭

However, the Bible also tells us to take every thought captive and make it obey Christ. “we pull down every proud obstacle that is raised against the knowledge of God; we take every thought captive and make it obey Christ.” ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭5‬ ‭

We can start to turn our focus on the truth. We can allow our words to speak the truth of His word. When our words line up with the truth in His Word they will be pleasing in His sight. His Word does not return void, it is His perfect will. Then we can put into practice what we learn.

His Words can be our refuge. A safe place for us to calm down our anxious, fearful, and angry spirit. A safe place to allow joy to fill our depressed heart. When we allow our thoughts to be redeemed by His Word continually, our emotions and behaviors will follow. Peace , love and joy can be our new focus until our thoughts, words and actions follow.
